For children up to the age of nine, weight-loss medicines and bariatric surgery are considered inappropriate. For those aged 10 to 19, approved medicines may be considered only when other interventions have not worked, while surgery is recommended only for severe obesity and under strict conditions.

According to the WHO, the proportion of children and adolescents aged 5 to 19 living with obesity has risen from 2% in 1990 to 8%, equivalent to 170 million people in 2024.
